School workshops

Spend 45 mins to 1hr learning the basics of Book Illustration with Dub Leffler.

While catering to mostly Primary aged Students across all stages, Dub can also cater to Highschool students as well as Adults.

His basic workshop consists of two parts – Part 1 & Part 2.
Part 1, is a basic rundown of his craft as one of Australia’s premier Illustrators of Children’s literature - including:

  • Showing a short film of his Art journey spanning 40+ yrs.
  • Showing his sketchbooks & discussing his illustration process-breaking down the steps of illustrating your own book- including different methods, inspiration & tips for the aspiring Illustrator.
  • Viewing actual Final Art with accompanying discussion.

Part 2 is the practical drawing part of the Workshop including:

  • A quick warm up for participants with light hand stretching.
  • Followed by two quick, fun drawing exercises designed to start engaging the Right-side of the Brain.
  • (all participants need for this will be something hard to learn on/desk/clipboard etc, 2 sheets of A4 paper (printer paper is fine.) and 1 Lead pencil.

1st Drawing Exercise – is a simple scribble drawing which is then looked at and discussed on a deeper level – where participants are shown how to ascertain information from a scribble- including the confidence level and emotional state of the Drawer of the scribble. (This exercise, teaches us to look for the deeper meaning in Art)

2nd Drawing Exercise is a simple inner and outer Portrait where participants draw one side of a face, using simple shapes with one hand and then, when complete- all participants swap hands and draw the other half of the face with their non-dominate hand.
(This exercise highlights 3 things we use when creating Art- our Eyes (perception), our Memory (shapes) and our Emotions (right side of the brain.) This also a great exercise investigating our own E.Q (Emotional Intelligence Quotient) which is accessed when we
swap to our non-dominate hands-accessing our Right brain & a great practical task introducing us to brain-plasticity.

At the end of every session, Dub will do a live drawing demonstration encompassing the aspects of the first 2 drawing exercises.

Dub is different to most Illustrators as he draws with both hands at the same time- something he will demonstrate by drawing two participants with two hands at the same time – illustrating the adage that Practice makes possible.

Most of Dub’s Workshops consist of 45- 60 mins, but longer, in-depth workshops up to 2hrs max, can be discussed.
Dub also does Q&A Panels for Adults on occasion.

  • Although I organised Dubb's visit to my school I was on leave at the time of his visit. I had a number of teachers get in touch to tell me how impressed they were. I am now back at work and have asked the students their thoughts. The kids gave Dubb 10 out of 10 for his presentation, they loved his sessions so much. He was described as very kind and extremely creative.
